Dead animal: who do I call?

Choose where the animal is and what kind it is. We show who usually handles it and the safety rules that apply.

Pick a location to see who is usually responsible.

Responsibility varies by state and county. Your state page links the official reporting page.

The rule of thumb

Whoever maintains the road usually removes what dies on it: the state DOT for state and U.S. highways, the county highway department for county roads, and the city or town for local streets. On private property the owner is responsible, though some cities collect bagged small animals at the curb.

Find your state DOT reporting page and deer salvage rules on our state pages, and read how to dispose of a dead animal safely.
